Activities of the

Gabriela Mistral Foundation & the Gabriela Mistral Campus

2017

The Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. and the Gabriela Mistral Campus are committed to a continued collaboration in order to hold programs and events that will enrich the lives and opportunities to the students of the Gabriela Mistral Campus.

The 2017 program of activities will be announced in January 2017. Activities will include:  Literary Contest; Art Contest; Presentations on Art, Music, Geography,Chess Workshop and others.

We are grateful to the school administration and the members of the Chilean community for their interest in taking an active participation in the activities of the Gabriela Mistral Campus.

MARCH 2017

At the start of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral’s “Poem of Chile”, the Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. in collaboration with Fundación Artesanías de Chile, an eight-panel poster exhibit with photographs provided by Fundación Artesanías de Chile and texts —in English and Spanish—and design by the Gabriela Mistral Foundation was donated to the Gabriela Mistral Campus for a permanent exhibit.

The Gabriela Mistral Foundation is grateful to Fundación Artesanías de Chile for their interest in working with our foundation and our work.

MARCH 2017

The Chilean Mapuche-Williche poet and narrator of the Mapuche Nation visited the Gabriela Mistral Campus and made a special presentation about the Mapuche culture and her literary work, including special readings of her works.The presentation included readings in Mapudungun & Spanish; a Q & A session with the students and faculty. The Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. donated a set of Ms. Huinao’s books to the school library. 

MARCH 2017

Chilean writer and professor and President of the ACHLI, Estela Socias, generously donated books about the Mapuche culture  to the School library. 

Tremümün -- Mapuche cook book, co-authored by Estela Socias

and

Fresia--the story of a doll inspired by a Mapuche legend by Estela Socias

The books are now part of the Gabriela Mistral/Chile collection at the Gabriela Mistral Campus

APRIL 2017

Continuing with the commitment of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. to take an active role at the Gabriela Mistral Campus by offering activities and events that will enrich their Mistralian knowledge and experience, in a joint project with the Gabriela Mistral Campus the First Annual Gabriela Mistral Poetry and Essay Contest was held. Students were able to submit their entries from February 15 - March 15, 2017. A jury, formed by members of the faculty of the Gabriela Mistral Campus and members of the Board of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. --Mrs. Maria Grasso, Mrs. Norah Valentina and Mrs. Gloria Garafulich-Grabois -- divided the entries in two groups and each group was awarded a First, Second and Third Prize and Honorary Mentions.  All participating students received a Certificate of Participation. 

The award ceremony was held on April 5, 2017 at the school and it celebrated not only all the students who participated but the entire school celebrated Gabriela Mistral’s 128th. birthday—it was a great celebration with cake and balloons!

We are grateful to the staff and students of the Gabriela Mistral Campus and to the children’s parents for encouraging them to participate and for their assistance.

JUNE 2017

On Tuesday, June 27, 2017 during a beautiful early summer afternoon, more than 600 people including students and their families gathered at the Queens Theater at Flushing Meadows Park to attend  the Gabriela Mistral Campus first Middle School graduating ceremony. 

The ceremony was attended by members of the faculty and administration; representatives from the Parent Teacher Association and a representative of NY State Senator Jose Peralta. honored to attend  and to give the keynote speech  at this ceremony which marked an important milestone in the journey of the gift of education.

The Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. was honored to be invited to attend and to give the keynote speech to the graduates. On this occasion the Foundation also presented the Gabriela Mistral Award  to a graduating student for his “Mistralian Spirit and Values.” 

The Board of Directors of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation, Inc. wishes every success to this most special group of young men and women as the continue their studies and in the journey of their lives.

November 2017

A great a important donation to the Gabriela Mistral Campus: On November 16, 2017 a original handwritten letter signed by Lucila Godoy Alcayaga--a donation of the Lizana Orellana Family in collaboration with the Gabriela Mistral Foundation-- was donated to the Gabriela Mistral Campus, where it is now permanently displayed in the school library and it is now the property of the Gabriela Mistral Campus.

The donation of the framed letter and envelope was donated with a transcript of the translation at a special event attended by students, parents, faculty, staff and member of the local government including New York State Senator, Jose Peralta.

We are most grateful the Lizana Orellana family for this very generous gesture which greatly enriches the mission the school when teaching the students about Gabriela Mistral and for entrusting the Gabriela Mistral Foundation to deliver this donation.
